As of 2005, over 10,000 crop formations have been documented worldwide. Over 700 of them appeared in 1991. Of the 229 formations reported from around the world in 2004, 33.9% of them appeared in England, where crop circles tend to cluster around sacred megalithic sites such as Stonehenge, Avebury and Silbury Hill. Other countries with crop circles included Germany (13.2%), the USA (9.2%), the Czech Republic (8.4%), and Italy (8.4%).

Since 2005, about 200 crop circles are reported each year worldwide. 

Virtually all crop circles share some basic characteristics:

Mathematics. Many crop circles include some encoded reference to time, mathematical relationships, complex ratios, or fractal expressions.

Geometry. Nearly all crop circles are geometric, expressing some relationship between forms, their intersection, proportions, and dynamics.

Circles. While triangles, squares, rectangles and other polygons show up in many crops, circular formations are nearly always present.

Elusive. Crop circles have only very rarely been recorded being made, and usually only by capturing mysterious lights at night above a crop, which is extrodinarily difficult to capture on camera.

Night visitors. Most crop circles appear overnight, and are then sighted by farmers or passersby the next morning. There are a few records of circles having appeared within the span of an hour or two by a plane flying over and back, or farmers.

Affects on the Crop. Many crop circles have been studied where the wheat or barley stalks have changed composition, become hollowed, and are woven together rather than pressed down. Some have included high levels of magnetic material (Milk Hill).
